PST Phase One Near Completion,
Gets Big Donation

August 23, 2004, HASTINGS, NE – More cyclists than ever before participated in the fourth annual Kool-Aid Classic Bicycle Tour held Saturday, August 14. The event was sponsored by HUB, Hastings Unique Bicyclists, and held in conjunction with Kool-Aid Days in Hastings, Nebraska. Over 100 riders from four different states rode their bicycles either 30 or 60 miles, drank Kool-Aid and helped raise money for the Pioneer Spirit Trail (PST), a hike and bike trail being built in and around Hastings. With generous help from the cyclists and local area sponsors, over $500 was raised for the trail.

A record number of 103 people registered for the event, 29 from Hastings and 74 from out-of town including 4 from other states, two from Kansas and one each from Iowa and Missouri. Other Nebraska towns well represented included 14 from Grand Island, 12 from the Omaha metropolitan area, 10 from both Aurora and Kearney and 9 from Lincoln. Last year’s event had 80 cyclists.

This event would not be possible without the support of the volunteers and sponsors. A special thanks to the volunteers that helped out before and/or during the event including: Elmer and Barb Murman, Doris Breckner, Bob and Sharon Breckner, Ben Green, Gregg Lemke, Amy Morris, Drew Ceperley and Bruce and Alisa Sandahl.

Special thanks also to the sponsors who gave either cash or in-kind support including: the Bike Shed of Kearney, Blue Moon Coffee Company, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Family Medical Center, Five Points Bank, Hogan’s Sporting Goods, Keith’s Pharmacies, Mama Rosey’s, McBride & Arneson Vision Clinic and Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab of Hastings.

In four years, this event has raised nearly $3000 for the Pioneer Spirit Trail. The money has been placed in a special fund with the Hastings Community Foundation to be used for the construction and beautification of the trail. With construction of the first phase near completion, a two-mile section from Libs Park to American Legion Memorial Wayside, it is exciting to see everyone’s hard work come to fruition.

Next year’s event is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 13, 2005. For more information about the Kool-Aid Classic Bicycle Tour, contact tour directors Bruce and Alisa Sandahl at 402-463-1138 or
