Cyclists Dream Comes True

August 12, 2017, HASTINGS, NE – Every cyclists dream is to enjoy smooth, pristine asphalt. A fresh ribbon of tarmac on which to ride minus the jarring bumps and potholes often found in this area of the country. That is exactly what cyclists found on this year’s Kool-Aid Classic Bicycle Tour. Thanks to the Adams County Roads Department, one-mile of Idlewilde Road and three-miles of Adams Central Road were freshly paved in time for this year’s ride.

Held in conjunction with Kool-Aid Days, a city-wide festival celebrating the creation of the colorful drink, cyclists from all over Nebraska and surrounding states rode their bicycles either 20, 40 or 65-miles through the quiet country roads surrounding the birthplace of Kool-Aid. The bike ride is organized by Hastings Unique Bicyclists (HUB) to raise money for the Pioneer Spirit Trail (PST), a hike and bike trail being built in and around Hastings. With generous help from the cyclists and local sponsors, $2,300 was raised for the trail this year.

“We enjoyed the ride & our first trip to Nebraska!” wrote Kathy Moore of Conway, Arkansas on the Kool-Aid Classic Facebook page. “Enjoyed the Kool-Aid Days activities round town as well!”

Of the 227 people who registered for the event, 56 were from Hastings and 171 were from out-of-town including 12 from 5 other states (four from Kansas; three from Colorado; two each from Arkansas and Iowa; and one from Wyoming. Other Nebraska towns well-represented included 35 from Kearney, 28 from Grand Island, 27 from Lincoln, 13 from the Omaha area, and four from North Platte.

The event would not be possible without the support of the volunteers and sponsors. A special thanks to the volunteers that helped out before and/or during the event including: Bob and Sharon Breckner, John Brooks, Drew Ceperley and Amy Morris, Ben and Caitlin Dumas, Beth Kavan, Elmer and Barb Murman, and Bruce and Alisa Sandahl.

Special thanks also to the sponsors who gave either cash or in-kind support including: Barista’s of Hastings, Bauer & Howard Dental Care, Bike Shed of Kearney, Borthwick Engineering & Construction, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Eakes Office Solutions, Eileen’s Colossal Cookies, Englund & Lindsteadt Financial Advisors, Family Medical Center of Hastings, First Street Brewing Company, Five Points Bank of Hastings, Inkredible Inc., Keith’s Pharmacies, and Valentino’s of Hastings.

In seventeen years, this event has raised $28,817 for the Pioneer Spirit Trail system. The money has been placed in a special fund with the Hastings Community Foundation to be used for the construction, beautification and maintenance of the trail system. Currently, the Pioneer Spirit Trail is nearly 9-mile continuous trail system connecting residential areas, shopping districts, schools and recreational areas.

Next year’s event is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 11, 2018. For more information about the Kool-Aid Classic Bicycle Tour, contact tour directors Bruce and Alisa Sandahl at 402-463-1138 or absandahl@windstream.net.
